South Dakota high school students will have the rare opportunity to be involved in national physics research at the Sanford Lab thanks to an outreach program through Black Hills State University. This summer two high school physics teachers, one from Hill City and one from Aberdeen, participated in a national research and study program known as QuarkNet that is designed to get high school teachers, and ultimately high school students, involved in particle physics research.

The Dakota Chamber Orchestra will begin rehearsals for the 2009-2010 season Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. on the campus of Black Hills State University in Spearfish. Rehearsals are held in the Meier Hall Band Room.

Two Black Hills State University professors were recently invited to give presentations at a United Nations conference in Seoul, South Korea. Dr. Len Austin and Dr. John Alsup, both associate professors in the college of education, spoke before an international audience at the World Civic Forum 2009 sponsored by United Nation’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

Black Hills State University hosted an All-Choral Reunion this summer. The All-Choral reunion attendees performed at the Spearfish Arts Center 32nd Annual Festival in the Park. The group plans to reunite in the summer of 2014 for another All-Choral reunion.

Urla Marcus has been named director of the Center for American Indian Studies at Black Hills State University. Marcus has served as associate director of the center since 2006.
Marcus, says she is plans to continue to advance the work of the Center in her new role as the director.
