The Black Hills State University campus and community celebrate the annual Swarm Days this week with events influenced by the “Sting lightning” theme. Events include carnivals, pep rally, a hike, alumni awards, homecoming football game and parade.
As a child, Connie Hubbard, adjunct German and piano instructor at Black Hills State University, aspired to be a rock star or a famous actress.
Though she didn’t make it onto the big screen, Hubbard has made a name for herself in local theater, performing in, directing and accompanying numerous productions in Spearfish since her debut in “Oklahoma!” in 2002. She joins several other BHSU faculty, staff, students and alumni on the stage for this year’s Matthews Opera House Theater on the Run, Saturday, Sept. 6.
Black Hills State University’s Green and Gold Days begins Aug. 21 and the annual Campus and Community Kickoff is Aug. 24.
Black Hills State University has joined two other state universities and other entities in North Dakota and South Dakota in an effort to reverse the decline in student participation in high school journalism programs.
Black Hills State University music professor Dr. Symeon Waseen has spent much of his summer preparing for his fall performance of one of the 20th century’s premier piano masterpieces – including trips to the local hardware store.In the unique performance next month, Waseen will perform Sonatas and Interludes, with what is referred to as a “prepared piano piece” by the late composer John Cage.
