Spearfish was named one of the Top 10 Small Towns by Livability.com this week.

Spearfish ranked number seven on the list, with Black Hills State University listed as a key component to the community’s high quality of life. Livability looks for small communities that inspire creativity and activity.

As part of the initiative to lower carbon emissions by the campus, Black Hills State University recently hosted an EcoExplorers Day Camp which focused on teaching children the importance of sustainability while creating an environment that was fun and friendly.

A group of panelists, including two Black Hills State University professors, will engage in a discussion on the connection of art and science, a theme that has also been the subject of a statewide traveling art exhibit. The discussion is Wednesday, July 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City and will be held in conjunction with the exhibit’s month-long stop at the Dahl.

Not even a week into the job and the new Black Hills State University president, Dr. Tom Jackson Jr., encountered a whole different world when he visited the Sanford Underground Research Facility (Sanford Lab) to visit with faculty and researchers about their work nearly a mile underground in the former Homestake Mine near Lead.

For its second performance of the season, Summer Stage at Black Hills State University is presenting Oliver!  a musical based on Charles Dickens’ novel “Oliver Twist.” The musical, which tells the story of the orphan boy who asked for more, will be performed for two weekends.
