Deadwood is one of the most famous names in Western history with many myths and legends spurred from its storied past. Black Hills State University is offering a summer camp that will look at Deadwood’s place in Western history and the true stories behind the myth and legends.

Romance and Reality of Deadwood is one of several academic camps BHSU will hold this summer. The history of Deadwood camp is May 30-31 and is open to middle and high school students as well as their parents.

Dr. Gary L. Wells, Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Iowa State University, will be the keynote speaker Thursday, March 21 at 2 p.m. in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall on the campus of Black Hills State University during the 15th Annual Black Hills Research Symposium (BHRS).

The SD Center for Enterprise Opportunity (SD CEO), located on the campus of Black Hills State University, is hosting a seminar, “Introduction to Federal Contracting,” at the University Center-Rapid City, Tuesday, March 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (M.S.T.) in room 127. The seminar will also be available via the Dakota Digital Network (DDN) at Northern State University, South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota and the University Center- Sioux Falls.

Black Hills State University recently honored the descendants of Elmer E. and Martha V.  Johnson as the 2013 Legacy Family. The award was presented by BHSU President Kay Schallenkamp and Steve Meeker, vice president of University Advancement, during halftime at a recent BHSU basketball game.

With nearly 15 percent of students attending classes at the University Center- Rapid City affiliated with the military, a need arose to cater to the growing student population.

After a year’s work, military students will soon have a place for increased support services with the opening of the Veterans Resource Center. A ribbon cutting will be held Friday, March 15 at 1 p.m. in the University Center-Rapid City (UC-RC) atrium.

While many U.S. politicians and military officials believe the country secured a victory in Iraq, international journalist and best-selling author Reese Erlich laid out a different story.

Around 70 Black Hills State University students, staff, faculty and community members attended Erlich’s talk last night. BHSU was a stop on Erlich’s national speaking tour looking his perspective of the war in Iraq.
