This year’s theme for American Indian Awareness week is  “STRONG: Solid Tribal Roots Offer New Growth” and includes the 30^th Annual Lakota Omniciye Wacipi taking place April 12-14 at the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center Field House.

A walk through the second floor of Woodburn Hall on the Black Hills State University campus will take you back to a time in Japanese history – a time before the country adopted the industrialized lifestyle of the West. The newest exhibit in the BHSU President’s Gallery is a group of Japanese Ukiyo-e prints from the private collection of Richard Hicks, professor emeritus.

Jeffrey Viken, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota, will talk about prejudice in the Black Hills and its roots in lack of information and education during a talk at Black Hills State University Tuesday, April 9 at 7 p.m. in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union Jacket Legacy Room.

Dr. Symeon Wassen, Black Hills State University assistant professor of music, will perform a recital featuring the works of Bartok and Beethoven as well as a personal composition.

Dr. Gary Wells, a professor of psychology at Iowa State University, who has studied witness identification since the mid-1970s, recently spoke to a group of Black Hills State University students, faculty, staff, community members and local law enforcement. His talk was part of University’s annual Black Hills Research Symposium.

High school students will have an opportunity to explore the world of fantasy and imagination to create a variety of art during the Black Hills State University ‘ZAP! POW! BLAM!’ summer art academy.

 

The three-day academy is part of a variety of academic camps BHSU is hosting this summer.  The summer art academy is scheduled for June 17-19 and is open to high school students who have competed grades 9-11.

Every day millions of people around the world go hungry. It could be a family member, neighbor or colleague. An event sponsored by the Black Hills State University Multicultural Committee and the Psychology Club will raise awareness to the fact that hunger happens everywhere, locally and around the world. 

The Evening of Hunger Awareness is scheduled for Tuesday, March 26 from 5-7 p.m. in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union Jacket Legacy Room.

Karen Berger’s year so far has been busy. She is in her final semester at Black Hills State University and currently interning at the Outdoor Campus West in Rapid City all while maintaining her duties as part of the National Guard.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard was just one of many dignitaries present at the recent ribbon cutting for the University Center- Rapid City (UCRC) Veterans Resource Center. The Veterans Resources Center began as a vision of a couple of student veterans who saw a need, and UCRC administrators who found space to fulfill that need.

Although a native New Yorker, Guido Della Vecchia spent nearly 30 years in Spearfish creating a life with his wife Johanna Meier and becoming an integral part of Black Hills State University and the local arts community. Guido died Wednesday at the age of 82 from complications from pneumonia.
