BHSU officially names Yellow Jacket mascot - Sting

Black Hills State University officially named their Yellow Jacket mascot Sting during the games against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology this week. BHSU students chose the name through a vote. Sting makes appearances at games and other events in the community.

According to university folklore, BHSU first adopted the Yellow Jacket mascot in the late 1920s, after a fan yelled “go you yellow jackets” at the football team which was wearing yellow jackets to stay warm during an exceptionally cold game.

The Yellow Jackets ended their seasons on a high note with wins against archrival Hardrocker teams Wednesday. The Lady Jackets, currently ranked 15th  in the nation,  will host a playoff game against Dickinson State Sunday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. at the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center. If the Jackets win that game they will also host the semifinal final game on Wednesday.

The men’s team will travel to Mayville State Sunday for their first round playoff game. That game tips off at 4 p.m. central time.
