BHSU Alumni Association appoints new board members

Spearfish community members and Black Hills State University graduates, Melissa Barth, Class of ‘02, and Shawnda Carmichael, Class of ‘02, were recently named to the BHSU Alumni Association board of directors. Each will serve a four-year term on the board.

Barth has worked as the marketing coordinator with the Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce/Convention and Visitors Bureau for six years, giving her a broad range of professional experience and community knowledge. She is an active member of the Booth Society Board of Directors and has previously served on the Donald E. Young Center Advisory Council. As a student at BHSU, she sang in the BHSU Concert Choir and volunteered at various locations throughout the Spearfish community.

Carmichael is currently a prevention advisor for Youth Wise. She works with K-12 students in the Spearfish and Lead/Deadwood school districts, providing prevention education to students with an emphasis on alcohol, drug, and tobacco prevention. Prior to joining Youth Wise, she worked at BHSU for five years, spending three years in the Enrollment Center and two as director of the Career Center. She volunteers for the Optimist Club, Spearfish Ambassadors, and Relay for Life. Carmichael served as a member of the University Programming Team and as a student ambassador while she was a student at BHSU.

Currently 24 members serve on the BHSU Alumni Association board of directors. The association’s mission is to provide leadership, organization and planning for effective alumni activities which will contribute to the realization of the goals and objectives of BHSU. According to Tom Wheaton, BHSU director of Alumni Relations, the Alumni Association works to develop a spirit of loyalty and fraternity among BHSU alumni and work with them to actively support the University in such programs as student recruitment, fundraising, student relations and projects, public relations, and other timely programs.

The board meets several times a year to focus on promoting and enhancing the University.
