BHSU mass communications student hired as MTV Citizen Journalist

BHSU student Jonna Langston was chosen to represent South Dakota during the 2008 elections as an MTV Citizen Journalist.
Black Hills State University sophomore mass communications major Jonna Langston was recently chosen to serve as South Dakota’s Citizen Journalist for MTV.  MTV’s new show “Street Team ‘08” hires Citizen Journalists to document the political process of the next election in their state.

A native of Lusk, Wyo., Langston heard about the open position during her news writing class at BHSU.  After applying, she was chosen as one of three finalists for South Dakota.  In late November, Langston’s video submission covered “Green Day,” the celebration of President Kay Schallenkamp’s support for the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment.  The video secured her spot as the state’s only Citizen Journalist.  MTV will provide Langston with a video camera, laptop, and video editing software.  Langston will use these materials to create videos to document the upcoming presidential election from South Dakota.

Each week, Langston will post a new video on her page at think.mtv.com.  Any outstanding videos will make their debut on television.  Her stories may also be picked up by the Associated Press or the MTV show “Choose or Lose.”  Langston hopes this opportunity will sharpen her video editing skills and help her become a broadcast journalist.
