|Black Hills State University will offer a new associate degree in human services at both the Spearfish and Rapid City locations, providing foundational skills to those pursuing in a career or already working in the human services and social services professions.
Black Hills State University just added another degree option – an associate degree in human services. The degree was approved by the South Dakota Board of Regents today. The degree will be offered this fall at both locations, Spearfish and BHSU-Rapid City.
The associate of science degree in human services provides entry-level workforce skills to those working in the fields of human services and social services.
"Human services professionals help a broad spectrum of populations including the aging, those with disabilities, people with substance abuse issues and more,” Dr. Rod Custer, provost and vice president of academic affairs at BHSU, said. “The associate degree will provide entry-level skills to individuals entering the helping professions and will provide a great foundation for those wanting to pursue additional education in human services."
Black Hills State already offers a bachelor’s degree in human services. Associate degree graduates will find themselves well situated to pursue further studies in this field since they will have already completed the core curriculum for the University’s B.S. degree program.
BHSU also received approval from the Board of Regents to offer a certificate program in managerial and organizational communication. Certificate programs usually require fewer credit hours to complete than a minor. They are developed by packaging a small set of courses that allow students to develop expertise within a focused area of study, addressing identified market and workforce development needs.
