|Black Hills State University Psychology Club member, Jeanie Stockland, junior psychology major from Wakonda, plays Bingo with residents at Edgewood Vista retirement community. The Psychology Club was one of several groups at BHSU, along with community representatives that participated in the annual event, which featured an increase of more than 50% in the number of volunteers.
Black Hills State University provided more than 1,000 hours of community service during the 2007 Make a Difference Day.
Over 50 people attended the breakfast before the official event. Breakfast sponsors include BHSU Dining Services, the Midwest Consortium for Service-Learning in Higher Education, Safeway, Wal-Mart, Common Grounds, Two Pines Espresso Lodge, the Flour Garden-Bake Shop, Millstone Family Restaurant, and Cedar House Restaurant.
This year’s event featured an increase of more than 50% in the number of volunteers, including community and university representatives. Several BHSU groups participated including: the American Marketing Association, Alpha Kappa Delta, Sociology Human Services Club, Collegiate Outdoor Leadership Program, Resident Hall Association, BHSU Volleyball Team, Student Senate, UP Team, Thomas Hall, Heidepriem Hall, Pangburn Hall, United Ministries, Student Ambassadors, Reading Council, Campus Ventures, Psychology Club, Chi Theta Xi Sorority and Health Sciences Student Organization. Students from West Elementary, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), United Methodist Church, Spearfish Cub Scouts, and the Canyon Hills Center were community representatives.
“I am really happy with the way the day went,” said Sarah Hanify, event organizer. “Each year, I hope that the event becomes bigger and better. The higher the participation is for Make a Difference Day, the more people can learn how great it is to volunteer and help others.”
Make a Difference Day was sponsored by the University Programming (UP) Team at Black Hills State University, in cooperation with the AmeriCorps* VISTA Community-University-Resource-Exchange (C-U-R-E) Office and several Spearfish businesses.
