Black Hills State University will sponsor the 2nd
Annual Jacket Ride as part of the Sturgis Rally events. The ride will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. with registration starting at 8:30 a.m.
The Jacket Ride is a guided motorcycle ride tour that will start at the Lyle Hare Stadium and end at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. The registration cost is $50 with an additional $25 for a passenger. For riders staying in the residence halls the cost will be $25. Registration includes a T-shirt, lunch at the Buffalo Chip and door prizes.
“It’s an expansion from last year; it’s a longer ride and a different destination while doing more at the end,” said Dr. Rod Custer, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs.
This year the tour will go straight through Deadwood and to the Crossroads on the west side of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, instead of cutting around Sturgis, which provides for more riding time and arriving at a different setting than last year. A photo shoot will be at the Field of Flags, which is at the entrance of the Crossroads and welcoming remarks given by BHSU President Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr.
The event, held during the famed Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, raises funds while at the same time bringing visibility to the University.
Last year $500 was raised for the BHSU Vets Club for the Jacket Ride Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a veteran attending BHSU or to a child of a parent who is a veteran.
Motorcycle enthusiasts gearing up for Sturgis events can support the University in a good cause while enjoying the scenic and astonishing route of the Northern Hills, Custer said. This event is planned to be annual and Custer hopes for even more participation than last year.
“People really enjoyed it. The bulk of the people were from BHSU and now we’re just looking to attract more people,” said Custer.
This event is sponsored by the Sturgis Buffalo Chip and Dennis Kirk. Other promoters include Black Hills Pioneer, Coca-Cola, Black Hills Harley-Davidson, A’Viands and Lueders.
