BHSU to host SDMTA Convention next week

The 2007 convention of the South Dakota Music Teachers Association will be held on the Black Hills State University campus Nov. 1-3.

Many activities are planned for the annual convention, including workshops, meetings, and concerts. The Rapid City Suzuki String Players will kick off the event with a concert Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. The following night, Friday, Nov. 2, guest artists Dr. Erik Anderson, cellist, and Dr. Diana Anderson, pianist, will perform a cello/piano concert at 7:30 p.m. Both concerts, which will be held in the Meier Recital Hall, are free and open to the public.

Numerous competitive performances featuring students from across the state will be held Nov. 2-3. There will also be competitions for students ages 10-17 as well as college students. Winners advance to a divisional competition.

Special guest artist Dr. Johanna Meier, eminent opera singer, will give a keynote speech and provide voice master classes. Additional workshops will be taught by the Andersons, Jim Margetts, Diana Christiansen, Celeste Parker, and BHSU music professor Dr. Janeen Larsen.

Most events will take place in Clare and Josef Meier Hall, BHSU’s newest building - a state-of-the-art music and classroom building that houses a 280-seat recital hall, choir and band rooms, faculty studios, soundproof practice rooms, instrument storage areas, and keyboard, listening, and piano labs.

There is a charge of $25 per day for non-members of SDMTA to attend the competitions and workshops. For more information contact Larsen at 642-6241 or JaneenLarsen@BHSU.edu.
