A group of Black Hills State University students surprised BHSU President Kay Schallenkamp with a special award and expressions of their gratitude during the 22nd annual Student Volunteer Awards Celebration.
The students presented Schallenkamp with a framed photograph of a large group of students holding a huge “Thank You” banner. Several students expressed their appreciation for Schallenkamp’s dedication and commitment to students.
Student leaders spoke about their nervousness as freshmen and noted that after meeting and working with the BHSU president how quickly those feelings transformed into appreciation, gratitude, and admiration. The students thanked Schallenkamp for her support not only professionally but also personally.
“President Schallenkamp always has the students in mind. She hears the voices of the students and works with us. Our dreams become reality through her leadership and vision,” Lorrin Anderson, vice president of the Student Senate, said.
Chase Vogel, Student Senate president, remembered the first day he met Schallenkamp when he was an uncertain freshman struggling with school and his plans. “President Schallenkamp walked by and stopped and asked me how things were going. Then she said ‘If you work hard and stay determined you will become successful.’ Those words changed my impression of Black Hills State University and changed my outlook on life.”
Since then Vogel has become much more involved in campus activities including serving as Student Senate president.
Several other students also offered their words of thanks including Jodi Mathis, Jessica Gramm, Ashley Grable, and Alex Whitney.
Schallenkamp, who has served as the ninth president of BHSU since 2006, will retire from the South Dakota public higher education system at the end of the 2013-14 academic year.
