Thirteen Black Hills State University students were recently recognized as the first group to complete a new leadership certificate program.

The program, started this year by Erica Whitiker, BHSU student engagement and programming coordinator, consists of six leadership sessions aimed at expanding leadership skills, challenging thoughts on leadership and developing stronger leaders.

The program includes three fall semester sessions and three spring sessions. The students were recognized at the Student Volunteer Awards Celebration held earlier this month.
Throughout the year, students studied various leadership topics including: what is leadership, what  makes you a leader, styles of leadership, communication tactics, and great leaders of the past and present.

“We studied the different styles and characteristics of leadership and each student took an inventory that identified their own leadership style. We studied great leaders in history and how ethics and role modeling are crucial in leadership,” Whitiker said. The students ended the series with a session where each student had to decide what type of leader they will be, and what impact they intend to have on the world.

Students who completed the program included: Andy Black, general studies major from Spearfish; Julie Gueswel, business administration – management major from Jay Em, Wyo.; Lucas Fralick, political science major from Gillette, Wyo.; Jennifer Moschell, math major from Wall; Alyssa Egan, physical education major from Forsyth, Mont.; Robert Bennett; business administration - management major from Rapid City; Lorrin Anderson, corporate communication major from Winner; Justin Bachelor, biology major from White River; Nathan Naasz, elementary education major from Winner; Lauren Feldt, history education major from Spearfish;  Jordan Hauger, applied health sciences major from Yankton; Chase Vogel, business administration – economics and finance major from Cheyenne, Wyo.;  and Samantha Miller, exercise science major from Huron.
