As the days get longer and the warmer weather finally sets in, more people will be out on the roads including motorcyclists. In an effort to reduce motorcycle accidents and help prepare beginning riders, the South Dakota Safety Council in cooperation with Black Hills State University is offering motorcycle training classes on campus.
Registration is now open for the classes that are available to the public and students. Two different classes will be offered: Basic Rider Course and Experienced Rider Course. Both classes begin May 12, 2014. Classes are held during the day, evenings and weekends. Additional classes for the Black Hills are offered in Rapid City and Sturgis.
The Basic Rider Course consists of 15 hours of instruction – five in the classroom and 10 hours on the motorcycle. Bikes are provided for use at no extra charge. This course is offered to anyone who: is at least 14 years old; has never ridden before; is considering riding; or has started riding. The basic course is $75 plus tax. There is no refunds.
The Experienced Rider Course consists of four hours of riding practice and up to one hour of classroom activities conducted between riding exercises. The course is open to licensed motorcyclists who have previously completed the Motorcycle Rider Course: Riding and Street Skills or the Basic Rider Course; possess basic operational skills; and are capable of passing a skills assessment. Passengers may participate but must not affect the safety and learning of other participants in the program. The cost is $60 and participants must provide their own insured motorcycles.
