BHSU music faculty collaborate on upcoming recital

Dr.Christopher Hahn, Black Hills State University instructor of music, and Colleen McKirdy, a music department accompanist, will perform a trumpet and piano recital Thursday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall.

“We are having a great time collaborating and this is truly a shared recital,” Hahn said. “The piano is integral to most of the pieces, not simply accompaniment to the trumpet.”

The duo will perform a variety of pieces ranging from the Baroque period through the present. The featured piece will be Eric Ewazen’s Sonata for Trumpet and Piano. “It is a beautiful piece that evokes moods from contemplative to exciting,” Hahn said. Ewazen’s music is influenced by folk music from the western United States.

Other pieces Hahn and McKirdy include composers Giovanni Viviani, Joseph Turrin, Richard Halligan (formerly of the band Blood, Sweat, and Tears), and cornet virtuoso Herman Bellstedt.
