A hands-on workshop, Website and WordPress Basics will be held Thursday, March 6 at the University Center-Rapid City in the Mac Lab, room 103. The workshop is divided into two sessions: the morning session, Website Basics, will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and the afternoon session, Create a Website using WordPress, will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The South Dakota Center for Enterprise Opportunity (SD CEO) has partnered with Chicken Creek Communications to bring this workshop to the University Center-Rapid City.
“Publishing a website, no matter the method, is somewhat technical in nature and requires a certain level of technical comfort,” says Dee Sleep, owner of Chicken Creek Communications. WordPress is a free, open-source content management system. Initially developed for blogging, it is now used extensively for static website creation as well. According to Google Trends, more than 25% of all websites use WordPress.
Sleep has operated the Chicken Creek Communications graphic design, marketing and publishing company in Spearfish for over 10 years. She is finishing her master’s degree in journalism and has taught mass communication courses for BHSU and South Dakota State University.
The morning session will give participants an overview of how websites work. Topics will include: how to select and secure a domain name; how to choose a host provider; how to transfer files for online access; how to organize your site; an overview of graphics file formats and resolutions; how search engines find websites; how to track site visitors; and the various methods of website creation.
The afternoon session will provide information on creating a website using WordPress. Topics will include: navigating the WordPress dashboard; integrating content using pages and posts; selecting a theme/design; adding functionality using plugins and widgets; uploading images; implementing a blog on your site; and more.
“This seminar is ideal for those who want to create or take control of their own website,” says Sleep. Participants can attend one or both sessions.
