John Rombough, Black Hills State University assistant facilities services director, was recently honored by the South Dakota Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) with the Patriot Award, a recognition of his contribution to national security through his support for military employees.

Jesse Komes, a second lieutenant in the Army National Guard and Reserve Force and a BHSU grounds keeper, nominated Rombough for the honor. Komes is part of the 1742 Company in Sioux Falls.

A former guardsman, Rombough said he knows the time and dedication required to be in the National Guard. Komes said Rombough provides him with a flexible schedule allowing him to attend his monthly weekend drills in Sioux Falls as well as the yearly two-week summer drill.

“It’s nice to have a boss that understands,” Komes said.

The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support Citizen Warriors through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed.

ESGR is a Department of Defense agency that seeks to promote a culture in which all American employers support and value the military service of their employees. They recognize outstanding support, promote increased awareness of the law and resolve conflicts through mediation.
