Healthcare Law and Tax Updates workshop to be held at University Center-Rapid City

A workshop, Healthcare Law and Tax Updates: How They Affect Your Business, will be held Thursday, Dec. 12, at the University Center-Rapid City (UC-RC), room 108 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

The South Dakota Center for Enterprise Opportunity (SD CEO) has partnered with Ketel Thorstenson, LLP to bring this workshop to the UC-RC.

This seminar is a great opportunity to refresh your understanding of regulatory traps of owning and operating a business,” says Nina Braun, partner with Ketel Thorstenson, LLP. “The Ketel Thorstenson team of experts will keep you up on laws in an evolving environment.”

Nina Braun, a partner with Ketel Thorstenson, LLP, will review the recent updates to the healthcare law, discuss the individual mandate which starts in 2014, give business owners a basic understanding of the pay or play penalties, and define applicable large employers for 2015.

Braun joined Ketel Thorstenson, LLP in 2005 after serving as a manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Georgetown University with a bachelor’s degree in finance in 2000 and from the University of Southern California with a master’s degree in accounting. Braun is a member of the South Dakota Certified Public Accountants Society (SD CPA) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Her experience lies in the commercial audit arena and she has extensive experience auditing 401(k) plans.

Jani Zweber and Jeanne Schneider, both from the accounting services department at Ketel Thorstenson, LLP, will distinguish between an independent contractor vs. an employee, given the new healthcare law. They will explain the definitions of each and determine penalties that could be assessed if employees are classified as independent contractors.

Zweber joined Ketel Thorstenson, LLP in 1996 and currently serves as bookkeeping manager. Her specialties include knowledge on a variety of accounting software packages. Schneider has been with Ketel Thorstenson, LLP for 17 years and currently serves as bookkeeping senior. She is a valued resource to the team with all of the knowledge she has gained from years on the job.

Michelle Minnerath, Certified Public Accountant and tax manager at Ketel Thorstenson, LLP, will provide an overview of the final repair regulations and new regulations and limits on what can be expensed as repairs and what has to be capitalized. She will also discuss ways to decrease income that is subject to the additional 3.8% and 0.9% Medicare surcharges. Minnerath will review some tax extenders that are set to expire in the new year, as well.

Minnerath joined Ketel Thorstenson, LLP in 2005 after practicing in public accounting for three years in Bismarck, N.D. She graduated from Jamestown College in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration with a concentration in financial planning.
