BHSU students compete in timed design contest

The Final Jeopardy theme song will likely not be playing in the background, but the pressure will still be on for nine Black Hills State University graphic design students competing in the upcoming Student Design Jam.

The University’s inaugural competition is Thursday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m.in the Jacket Legacy Room of the BHSU David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. The idea for the event came from a similar one the Black Hills American Advertising Federation (AAF) organized earlier this year with local graphic design professionals, according to Dustin Hinson, assistant professor of mass communication and organizer of the event.

The handpicked students will compete in three rounds of three students with a final round to determine first, second and third place. The challenges, developed by local design professionals, will be different for each round. Each student has 10 minutes to create something that adheres to the criteria of the challenge. Local design specialists will also be judging the competition.

The Design Jam will allow students to combine concepts they learned in class with critical thinking skills under the pressure of a deadline, said Hinson, also an AAF board member. “It reinforces the concept of creativity and thinking in a more interesting way to problem solve,” he said.

The event will also provide an opportunity for the BHSU students to display their talents to potential employers, Hinson said.

Students competing include: Evan Bruce, mass communication major from Biddle, Mont.; Carissa Doolittle, commercial art major from Midland; Taylor Hagel, mass communication major from Rapid City; Laura Howard, mass communication major from Belle Fourche; Sarah Jackson, mass communication major from Rapid City; Emily Morse, mass communication major from Rapid City; Makena Peet, art major from Rapid City; Allison Praeuner, commercial art major from Norfolk, Neb.; and Joshua Rundell, mass communication major from Rapid City.

The event, free and open to the public, begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour. The competition begins at 7 p.m. For more information contact Hinson at Dustin.Hinson@BHSU.edu
