The competition included two categories. Entrants were required to perform one difficult classical selection and contestants were judged on poise and stage presence as well as musicianship.
In the younger student category, Tessa Sleep (flute) from Spearfish won first place and Emma Tinsley (soprano) from Aladdin, Wyo. and Olyvia Moore (piano) from Belle Fourche tied for second place. In the older age category, Duncan McGough (violin) from Rapid City won first place; Soren Sasso (piano) from Rapid City won second place; and Bailey Paugh (trumpet) from Rapid City won third place.
The competition judges were Dr. Johanna Meier; Elizabeth Hastings of the Liederkranz Foundation in New York City; and Mijin Choi, opera faculty member. The first place winners performed on the Gala Evening on Saturday, June 16. The competition was the opening event for the Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute, which features an aria recital on June 18 and staged performances of opera scenes on June 28 and 29.
