The Black Hills Summer Institute of the Arts will host the 13th annual Young Performers Competition for musicians Friday, June 14 at 7 p.m. in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall at Black Hills State University.
The competition will highlight the talent of young musicians from area communities. There will be two categories, ages 9-14 and ages 15-20. Winners in each category will be awarded cash prizes. Each entrant will perform one memorized classical piece. Contestants will be judged on poise and stage presence as well as musicianship.
The contest is sponsored by the Black Hills Summer Institute of the Arts; the judging is coordinated by Johanna Meier. The winners perform in the Gala Celebration of the Arts concert the next evening. Admission is by donation at the door.
Last year, pianist Madison Wieczorek, Rapid City placed first in the 9-14 age group, and pianist Sandra Shaefer, Rapid City, placed first in the 15-20 age category.
