Vucurevich Foundation donation funds scholarships for BHSU academic summer camps

The John T. Vucurevich Foundation recently approved $2,500 in grants to fund scholarships for Black Hills State University summer academic camps.

The scholarships will be offered for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) camps which include: the Science Scholars Summer Institute, the Engineering Technology Camp – 3D Drafting: Designing a Home, and Taking Care of Business Accounting Style.

Named after successful banker and philanthropist John T. Vucurevich, the foundation awards grants to charitable organizations committed to helping the poor, distressed, under privileged, the advancement of the arts, education & science, and promotion of social welfare within South Dakota with preference given to the West River area and in particular the Black Hills Region.

The scholarships, which will cover the entire cost of the camp, will be given on a needs basis. There are a limited number of scholarships available.

The BHSU science camp is schedule for June 3-28 and is open to high school students who have completed 10th grade. The science camp will give students an opportunity to explore science in the BHSU research laboratories. They will participate in research projects along with undergraduate and graduate students under the mentorship of faculty in the area of their interest. Students will also learn the underlying rationale for their project, develop cutting-edge scientific techniques on state of the art equipment, and present and discuss results at weekly seminars.

The engineering technology camp is scheduled for June 7 and is open to high school students who have completed 10th grade. Student will learn how to create 3D house models.  During the process, students will learn about space organization and energy efficient building materials as well as how the design of floor plans ties into the exterior environment.

The accounting camp is scheduled for June 10 and is open to students who have completed 10th grade.  During the one-day camp, students will explore accounting as the foundation and the language of business. Activities will include: an interactive accounting game; an accounting scavenger hunt; and exploring accounting careers with faculty and alumni.

BHSU also has summer academic camps focusing on art, history, and creativity and critical thinking.
