Black Hills State University accounting students are volunteering their time to assist students, elderly, low-income individuals, and veterans with tax preparation and filing as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).
VITA tax preparation will be at the Grace Balloch Memorial Library in Spearfish from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following Saturdays: Feb. 23, March 16, and March 23, by appointment only. Appointments can be made by calling the library at 642-1330.
VITA will also be available on the BHSU campus every Tuesday from Feb. 19 through March 19, (except March 5) in the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center, room 206, from noon-3 p.m. On-campus sessions are for walk-ins or drop-offs only; no appointments are necessary.
Those interested will need to bring a copy of their Social Security card, identification card, last year’s tax return, and all information pertinent to this year’s return (W-2s, 1099s, etc.). E-filing of returns is also available, which requires banking information for direct deposit.
VITA sites do not prepare tax returns which are beyond the scope of the students’ authority including: gross income greater than $50,000; returns that include significant business, farming or rental income; returns that require a depreciation schedule; individuals with significant military income; and any other tax return deemed beyond the scope of the VITA site at the time of the appointment.
