Nearly 30 retirees attended a recent Facebook workshop at the Black Hills State University campus. Facebook for Retirees is a workshop to help retirees learn the basics of Facebook. Retirees have the opportunity to learn how to interact using social media by learning how to use Facebook to communicate with their families and friends in a convenient manner.

BHSU Enactus students and the South Dakota Center for Enterprise Opportunity (SD CEO), the women’s business center at BHSU, hosted the event.
“The Facebook for Retiree’s class was very successful; we had a good turnout. People were willing to be hands on and were interested in the videos we had to offer,” said Abbey Vansteenwyk, Enactus media coordinator.
Vansteenwyk was the main speaker and instructor for the workshop along with seven other BHSU students who are members from Enactus. The purpose for the workshop was to answer any specific questions a visitor might have and provide them with hands-on learning.
Some of the basic tools attendees learned during the event included how to open a Facebook account, add friends, block people, and create a profile. The participants also received a YouTube video to take home that demonstrated how to upload images.
The workshop is available to the Spearfish community as well as surrounding areas once a semester during the school year. The January workshop had 27 guests who attended from Spearfish and Rapid City. With 70 percent of the guests interested in a second course to the workshop, Enactus wants to provide more opportunities similar to this one in the future, which may include a more advanced course to Facebook for Retirees with further hands-on learning.
