BHSU students awarded scholarships through SDAHPERD

Heather Kuhrt, Colton Reichert, and Melissa Bourdon received scholarships from SDAHPERD.
Three Black Hills State University students recently received scholarships through the South Dakota Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Colton Reichert, physical education and exercise science major from Sturgis; Melissa Bourdon, physical education and elementary education major from Redfield; and Heather Kuhrt, physical education major from Gillette, Wyo., were recognized during the annual SDAHPERD convention last year. The Gary Busch/Marge Evjen scholarships are based on academic performance, dedication demonstrated through active participation in service related to physical education or coaching, and professional growth goals.

The scholarships include a membership and stipend through the organization. The students were recognized for their professional development and participation in activities with youth. All three students specialize in K-12 physical education teaching majors with minors in Health and/or coaching.

“We are very proud of Heather, Colton, and Melissa for demonstrating the high standards for academic success, community involvement related to the physically educating our youth, and professional involvement that enabled them to secure the scholarship. This will be one of many accolades throughout their pre-service and professional teaching careers,” said Dr. Betsy Silva, BHSU associate professor.

BHSU has the only Nationally Accredited Physical Education Teacher Preparation program through the National Association for Sport and Physical Education in South Dakota.

SDAHPERD strives to provide leadership, assist in research and experimentation, and advance the standards and quality of teaching in health, physical education, recreation, and dance.
