BHSU volunteer program receives grants to help fund organization

Black Hills State University’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) recently received two grants from local organizations. One grant was from the Greater Belle Fourche Area Community Foundation for $500, and the other grant was from the Spearfish Area Foundation for $750.

RSVP is a BHSU sponsored organization helping senior citizens donate their time serving their communities. Funded entirely from donations and grants, the organization relies on community generosity to operate. Local businesses are resources RSVP can usually count on year after year depending on the businesses’ given budget. The money is used for a variety of needs such as mileage reimbursement, training opportunities, supplement insurance, and a variety of recognition incentives. This month’s grants are being used towards volunteer insurance and mileage reimbursement in particular.

“RSVP pairs volunteers over 55 that are willing to donate their time with a non-profit agency that needs volunteer assistance. We want the volunteer to have a successful, meaningful experience while serving an agency that’s helping those less fortunate in our community. We are very fortunate to serve the area that we do as western South Dakotans are very willing to give their time to those in need,” said Nancy Wietgrefe, director ofRSVP.

RSVP strives to provide a fulfilling volunteer opportunity for those willing to donate their time, and fulfill a critical need for the community. Newsletters and e-mails are updated throughout the year for volunteers and organizations to see what is being offered throughout Western South Dakota and all of the opportunities available to them.

RSVP will provide roundtable training to those interested in learning more about volunteering for the organization, or for non-profits who use volunteers to have the chance to converse with one another. The training will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Jan. 31 in the Trump conference room in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. For more information please contact Nancy at (605) 642-5198 or visit www. BHSU.edu/rsvp.
