Black Hills State University professor of photography Steve Babbitt was a finalist in the eighth annual Art of Photography Show, an international competition and exhibition.

the San Diego Art Institute after being selected as one of the top 200 photographs in the eighth annual Art of Photography Show, an international competition and exhibition.

The Opening Reception Gala and Awards Ceremony for the Art of Photography Show at the San Diego Art Institute “Museum of the Living Artist,” took place last month and attracted more than 1,500 people, including artists and collectors from around the world. Babbitt’s photograph was selected as one of the 200 top photographs from the competition, which inspired almost 17,000 entries from 77 countries. Steven Churchill, producer of the Art of Photography Show, is committed to creating exposure opportunities for emerging and established artists. Babbitt’s photograph “Re-bar” will be on exhibit until Nov. 11, 2012.

An exceptional photographer who has been instrumental in the growth and expansion of the mass communication program at BHSU, Babbitt has an impressive background in fine arts photography and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has been teaching photography at BHSU since 1994.In recent years, Babbitt has expanded his photography expertise to commercial, architectural, and industrial photography.

For many photographers, what differentiates this competition from others is its notable judges. Every year a curator from a major museum is asked to jury the Art of Photography Show. The judge for this year’s competition was Julian Cox, founding curator of photography and chief curator at the fine arts museums of San Francisco. Art collectors recognize this as an unparalleled opportunity to see compelling photographs juried by a world class curator.

The Art of Photography Show is a well-recognized and influential constituent in the world of contemporary photography. The show provides many benefits to the artists who are selected as finalists, including the experience of the jury and exhibition process, options for publication, networking in the photography industry, and possible monetary awards.

The subjects in Babbitt’s work are often in or connected to the landscape and in some way seem out of place or not readily identifiable. Babbitt states, "I like to use my camera to aid in my exploration of the world and to pare away or isolate all that I feel is unnecessary."
