Winners announced for Young Performers Competition

Participants in the Young Performers Competition, part of the Black Hills Summer Institute of the Arts hosted by Black Hills State University each summer are: Alana MacLachlan, pianist – third place in the older division; Karen Balsley; Ben Nelson, tenor – first place in the older division; Ashton Vandenhoek, soprano – second place in the older division; Luke Franz; Amanda Reeves; Gabriella Cuebas, pianist – first place in the younger division; and Deborah Matters, violinist – second place in the younger division.

Winners have been announced for the ninth annual Young Performers Competition, which is part of the Black Hills Summer Institute of the Arts hosted by Black Hills State University.

The young musicians were divided into two categories: ages 9-14, and ages 15-20. Entrants were required to perform one memorized classical piece. Contestants were judged on poise and stage presence as well as musicianship.     

In the 9-14 age division, the winner was pianist Gabriella Cuebas of Box Elder, student of James MacInnes. Second place went to violinist Deborah Matters of Hermosa.

In the 15-20 age division, first place was awarded to tenor Ben Nelson of Sturgis, student of Stephen Parker. Second place went to soprano Ashton VandenHoek, and third place went to pianist Alana MacLachlan.

The competition judges were Dr. Johanna Meier; Richard Nechamkin of the New York Opera Forum; and Charis Dimaras of Ithaca College.

First place prizes were sponsored by Pioneer Bank and Trust and the Northern Hills Rotary Club; second place prizes were sponsored by Susan Callahan and Queen City Motors.

Saturday, June 16, 7:30 p.m. -"An Evening of Art Songs" - Meier Recital Hall in Clare and Josef Meier Hall. Songs are by Johannes Brahms, accompanied and coached by New York pianist Charis Dimaras. Performances will be by the pre-professional students of the Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute. Tickets prices are $8 and $6 at the door.

Wednesday, June 18, 12 p.m. - Voice Master Class - Meier Recital Hall in Clare and Josef Meier Hall. There is no admission charge.

Friday, June 22, 7:30 p.m. – “Opera Scenes” -  Meier Recital Hall in Clare and Josef Meier Hall. There will be excerpts from a variety of favorite operas, fully staged. The event will also include a pre-opera lecture by Johanna Meier at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and $8 at the door.

Saturday, June 23, 7:30 pm – “A Night at the Opera” - Woodburn Auditorium. A full act of “Louise,” sung in English and fully staged. Tickets are $10 and $8 at the door. A dinner is available at 5:30 p.m. in the Meier Hall Atrium in Clare and Josef Meier hall. Tickets are $15 and reservations are required.
