Black Hills State University graduate Nicole (Fellows) Keegan, Class of ’05, received a surprise visit from BHSU’s Yellow Jacket mascot, Sting, and Tom Wheaton, director of Alumni Relations at BHSU. Keegan, who teaches seventh-grade science and social studies at Dakota Middle School in Rapid City, received the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award for excellence in teaching. She was one of just 13 teachers who earned the award this year, which included a $25,000 cash prize to be used at the recipient’s discretion. She has been at the school for 11 years and is also a coach for volleyball, basketball, weight training, and track and field, along with being involved in other initiatives throughout the school system. Sting and Wheaton presented Keegan with a gift from BHSU and told her class how proud her alma mater was of her recent accomplishments.
