BHSU student receives Veteran of the Month distinction

BHSU student Tom Motacek receives the November 2011 Veteran of the Month Award
Rapid City Mayor Sam Kooiker presents the November 2011 Veteran of the Month Award to Black Hills State University student Thomas (Tom) Motacek. Motacek, a full-time BHSU student majoring in industrial technology at the University Center-Rapid City, was recognized for his achievements in the U.S. Navy and his continued service in the VFW, the Military Order of the Cootie, The Retired Enlisted Association, the American Legion, the Moose, and the Elks.

Black Hills State University student Thomas (Tom) Motacek was recognized as the November 2011 Veteran of the Month by the City of Rapid City and the Veterans Coordination Commission.

Rapid City Mayor Sam Kooiker presented the award to Motacek in honor of his many achievements during his time in the U.S. Navy and his continued service as a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the Military Order of the Cootie, The Retired Enlisted Association, the American Legion, the Moose, and the Elks.

Motacek, a full-time BHSU student majoring in industrial technology at the University Center-Rapid City, served in the U.S. Navy from 1987 until 1998. During that time, he assisted in the rescue of five people from a burning ship in the Straits of Hormuth, performed supervisory duties for the engineering sections of the various ships to which he was assigned, and served as a Navy recruiter. He received numerous awards and decorations including: the Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, Navy "E" Ribbon, Navy Good Conduct Award, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, three Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, Navy Recruiting Service Ribbon with five Gold Wreath Awards, three Letters of Commendation, and the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist Pin.

Following his medical discharge from the Navy, Motacek became an independent engineering consultant opening his own business in 2004. He enrolled at BHSU in 2011 to pursue a degree in industrial technology and plans to start up his own business in Rapid City after graduation.
