Smita Dalvi, professor at Pillai's College of Architecture under the University of Mumbai, India, recently presented “Indo-Islamic Art and Architecture” to Black Hills State University students and faculty.
Dalvi is currently visiting the United States as a Fulbright Fellow under the “Direct Access to the Muslim World” program. Her presentation at BHSU highlighted the tradition of Islamic architecture in India and addressed the issue of how Islamic ideas of form and structure gradually came to incorporate indigenous styles and formations creating a unique and distinctive style. Her lecture was supported by a slide show of different monuments, mosques, mausoleums, and palaces in India.
Dr. Ahrar Ahmad, BHSU political science professor, coordinated Dalvi’s visit to campus. Ahmad commented that the presentation was “very well received by the audience” and was both “informative and interesting.”
