Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute to present Gala Celebration of the Arts

Tyler Raad, recent Black Hills State University graduate from Spearfish, will perform scenes from Bernstein’s “West Side Story” during the Gala Celebration of the Arts Saturday, July 11 on the BHSU campus.

The Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute will present Gala Celebration of the Arts Saturday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall on the campus of Black Hills State University. The program includes short selections from the worlds of music, dance, theatre, and literature. Featured performers will include the winners of the Young Performers Competition held June 10.

Scenes from Bernstein’s “West Side Story” will be performed by soprano Carissa Scroggins from Rapid City, tenor Tyler Raad, recent BHSU music and theatre graduate from Spearfish, and Black Hills Dance Centre dancers.

Arrangements of operatic arias by composer Franz Liszt will be performed by renowned pianist Eugene Gienger. Carol Panerio, Spearfish, will present a literary reading from her recently published novel, and dancers from the Academy of Dance Arts will perform a ballet selection. A reception will follow the performance. Cocktail or business attire is suggested. Tickets will be available at the door; $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.

The Gala is the opening event for the Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute, a two-week program for advanced singers from across the United States, currently in its thirteenth year. Artistic director Johanna Meier, an internationally acclaimed opera singer, recently received the South Dakota Governors Award for the Arts. Since her retirement from the world of opera, Meier has worked to help further arts and culture in her hometown of Spearfish. She is also committed to enhancing the education of career-oriented musicians whose goal is performance. Meier brings her many years of stage experience to help students reach their goals, and many of her professional colleagues in the opera world come to join in the endeavor as faculty and staff members.

The next opera event, Aria Recital Evening, will be held July 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Meier Recital Hall. For more information call Cami at 642-6420 or email Cami.Dohman@BHSU.edu.
