Winners announced for Kevin Whirlwind Horse Memorial run/walk

The recipient of the 2007 Kevin Whirlwind Horse memorial scholarship was, Elias Fast Horse, sophomore physical education major from Rapid City. The scholarship was presented by Kevin’s mother, Mae Whirlwind Horse. Each year at the annual Kevin Whirlwind Horse Memorial Run/Walk, one $500 scholarship is presented to an American Indian sophomore who demonstrates outstanding ability and leadership skills.

The overall winners from a total of 85 participants at this year’s Kevin Whirlwind Horse Memorial Run/Walk were Nolan Taylor and Marcie Holben in the 10K run and Tyson White and Tara Buehner in the 5K run.

The Kevin Whirlwind Horse Memorial Run is sponsored each year on the Saturday of the Lakota Omniciye spring powwow in memory of Kevin Whirlwind Horse, a former Black Hills State University student who was killed in a car accident in 1984. Marla Herman, a fellow student and member of Lakota Omniciye, organized the first memorial run in the spring of 1985, and it has been held every year since.

Kevin was an active and respected student leader, and the memorial run/walk fundraiser serves to recognize the achievements of students who are working to improve their campus, community, and world through the active pursuit of higher education.

Each year, one $500 scholarship is presented to an American Indian sophomore who demonstrates outstanding academic ability and leadership skills. The recipient of the scholarship this year is, Elias Fast Horse, sophomore physical education major from Rapid City.

The race results are: girl’s eight and under division 1/4 mile run: 1st, Joslin Heinert (Mission); 2nd, Arila Heinert (Mission); and 3rd Shaylie Holben (Spearfish).                                                   

The boy’s eight and under division 1/4 mile run winners were: 1st, Canute Bancroft (Spearfish); 2nd, Stran Holben (Spearfish); and 3rd, Joseph One Skunk (Philip).

The girl’s division for ages 9-12, 1/2 mile run winners were: 1st, Danielle Whirlwind Horse (Manderson); 2nd, Haley Jensen (Spearfish); and 3rd, Rachel Jensen (Spearfish). 

In the boy’s division for ages 9-12, 1/2 mile run the winners were: 1st, Forest Suess (Spearfish); and 2nd, Sterling McMichael (Spearfish).The men’s division for ages 13-19, 5K winners were: 1st, Chris Gillis (Belcourt, N.D.); 2nd, CJ Wilkie (Belcourt, N.D.); and 3rd, Stacy Wilke (Belcourt, N.D.).

The winner for the women’s division for ages 13-19, 5K was Meghan Pederson (Spearfish).

In the men's division for ages 20-29, 5K the winners were: 1st, Tyson White (Eagle Butte); and 2nd, Dustin Johnson (Spearfish). 

The winner for the women’s division for ages 20-29, 5K was Tara Buehner (Spearfish). 

The winners for the women’s age division 30-39, 5K were: 1st, Valerie McMichael (Spearfish); 2nd, Doreen Schaar (Gillette); and 3rd, Becky Pederson (Spearfish).

The men's division for ages 40-49, 5K winners were: 1st, Wade Pehl (Belle Fourche); and 2nd, Brent Dschaak (Belle Fourche).

The women's division for ages 40-49, 5K winners were: 1st, Sheryl Simpson (Spearfish); and 2nd, Sherri Palmer (Sundance).

In the men’s 50 and over division, 5K winners were: 1st, Wally Little Moon (Howes); 2nd, Gary Miller (Rapid City); and 3rd, George Watts (Valentine, Neb.).   The winner for the women's 50 and over division, 5K was Yvonne Adrian (Belle Fourche).

The men's division for ages 20-29, 10K winners were: 1st, Nolan Taylor (Rapid City); 2nd, Dan Brelje (Spearfish); and 3rd, Bo Red Bow (Rapid City). 

In the women's division for ages 20-29, 10K the winners were: 1st, Sarah Bone (Yellowstone National Park, Wyo.); 2nd, Amber Dvirnak (Killdeer, N.D.); and  3rd, Andrea Hughes (Spearfish).

The men's division for ages 30-39, 10K winners were: 1st, Ken Starr (Ft. Yates, N.D.); 2nd, Jim Cheatham (Hulett); and 3rd, Thomas Yellow Boy (Mission).

The women's division for ages 30-39, 10K winners were: 1st, Marcie Holben (Spearfish); 2nd, Krista Stevens (Spearfish); and 3rd, Lisa Jensen (Spearfish).

In the men’s division for ages 40-49, 10K the winners were: 1st, Sonny Roberts (Gillette, Wyo.); and 2nd, Michael Clinchers (Kyle).

The winner for the women's division for ages 40-49, 10K was Belinda Larson (Spearfish).

The men's 50 and over division winner was Marvin Linn (Sturgis).
