BHSU women finish first at Jackrabbit Stampede

Black Hills State University women’s rodeo team finished first at the Jackrabbit Stampede Rodeos held in Brookings, maintaining their lead in the Great Plains Region. Kristen Lawrence, sophomore from Promise, received third in the average in the barrel racing.

Black Hills State University women’s rodeo team finished first at the two South Dakota State University Jackrabbit Stampede Rodeos held April 7-10 in Brookings, maintaining their lead in the Great Plains Region.

The women finished with 305 points in the first rodeo. The Yellow Jackets once again edged out Dickinson State University for the team title. Jordyn Johnson, junior from Sturgis, placed second in the first go in the breakaway roping with a 2.6 second run. Johnson also placed second in the average by roping two calves in 15.4 seconds. Jamie Britton, sophomore from Buffalo, finished the first go with a fifth place finish in goat tying with a time of 8.3 seconds. Britton placed fourth in the short go with an 8.2 second run. Britton also placed third in the average in the goat. Kristen Lawrence, sophomore from Promise, received fifth in the first round with a 13.88 second run. Lawrence raced her way to third in the short go with a time of 13.96 seconds.
Lawrence ended up third in the average in the barrel racing. Taylor Shoemaker, sophomore from Faith, was third in the short go in goat tying with an 8.1 second run. Joey Painter, sophomore from Buffalo, was first in the first go in the goat tying event with a time of 7.4 seconds.

The BHSU men’s team ended the first rodeo with a third place finish with 360 points. Leading the Yellow Jackets was Tye Hale, senior from White Owl. Hale placed first in the first round of competition in the tie down roping with a time of 10.9 seconds. Hale went on and roped his way to a fourth place finish in the short go with a time of 14.0 seconds. Hale received second place in the average in the tie down event. Hale muscled his way to a first place finish in the first go in the steer wrestling event. Hale made a run of 4.7 seconds. Newley Kartak, senior from Colome, finished fourth in the first go of the tie down roping. Kartak’s time was 13.2 seconds. Kartak also placed fifth in the average in the tie down roping event with a time of 30.3 seconds.

The BHSU women once again received the team title in the second rodeo. Painter tied for first place in the first go of breakaway roping with a time of 2.6 seconds. Painter placed second in the short go with a time of 3.1 second and second in the average in the roping event. In the goat tying event, Painter clocked a second place time of 7.0 seconds. Painter placed second in the short go with a time of 6.9 seconds and first in the average in goat tying. Britton placed fourth in the first go of goat tying. Britton won the short go with a time of 6.8 seconds and placed second in the average. Shawnee Yordy, freshman from Martin, placed fifth in the first go with a time of 8.0 seconds in the goat tying event. Lawrence placed fifth in the first go of barrel racing with a time of 13.78 seconds.

The Yellow Jacket men placed third as a team during the second Jackrabbit Stampede.

The next round of competition for the Yellow Jackets is the University of Nebraska Lincoln Rodeo held in Lincoln, Neb. April 15 and 16.
