Over 100 junior high and high school students gather at BHSU for Black Hills Jazz Festival

More than 100 junior high and high school students from South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska performed in jazz bands and vocal groups at the annual Black Hills Jazz Festival on the Black Hills State University campus recently.

The winners of the junior high/middle school jazz bands division were: first, Spearfish 7th grade jazz band; second, Sturgis 7th and 8th grade jazz band; and third, Spearfish 8th grade jazz band.

The Class B high school jazz bands division winners were: first, Miller I; second, St. Thomas More (Rapid City); and third, Sundance (Wyo.).

In the Class A division of high school jazz bands, the winners were: first, Lead-Deadwood; and second, Winner.

The Class B high school swing/show choir division winners were: first, Bayard (Neb.); and second, Sundance (Wyo.).

In vocal jazz choirs, the Class B high school winners were: first, Sundance (Wyo.); second, Miller; and third, St. Thomas More (Rapid City).

In the Class A high school vocal jazz choir division, Winner high school took first place.

The winners of the junior high/middle school division show/swing choirs were: first, Spearfish; second, Twin Spruce (Gillette, Wyo.); and third was, Sundance (Wyo.).

In addition to the awards above there were awards given for Outstanding Instrumental Soloists and Outstanding Vocal Soloists.
