BHSU to host the annual Madrigal Dinner

Black Hills State University will once again host the annual Madrigal Dinner Dec. 16-19 at 6:30 p.m. each evening. Audiences will be treated to a full evening of food, music, and theatrical entertainment during the annual fund-raising event for the BHSU music department.

Black Hills State University Chamber Singers will present a holiday favorite, the annual Madrigal Dinner, Dec. 16, 17, 18, and 19 in Clare and Josef Meier Hall on the BHSU campus.
Audiences will be treated to a full evening of food, music, and theatrical entertainment during the annual fund-raising event for the BHSU music department.

The singers, in Renaissance garb, will portray a sixteenth-century king, queen, and court who have invited the audience to a Christmas feast in the castle’s great hall. During the dinner portion of the evening, the court, led by the court jester, will present a program including performances of several a cappella traditional carols such as “Deck the Hall,” “The Boar’s Head Carol,” “A Gloucestershire Wassail,” and of course, “Silent Night.”

In addition to great music, the audience will enjoy a meal catered by A’viands that will include mixed green and Belgian endive salad with cranberries and pistachios, oven-roasted turkey breast with maple-whipped sweet potatoes and sautéed broccoli rabe, and pumpkin chai crème brulee dessert. After dessert, the court will move to the recital hall stage to perform a brief concert of Renaissance madrigals which will feature solos, small ensembles, and the full group performing a cappella and harpsichord-accompanied madrigals by master composers of the Renaissance and early Baroque including Josquin des Prez, Hans Leo Hassler, Ludwig Senfl, John Dowland, Claudio Monteverdi, and others.

The event is sponsored by the BHSU Music Department and directed by Dr. Jonathan Nero. The dinner and entertainment begins at 6:30 p.m. each evening; tickets are $35. For reservations or more information, call 642-6133 or 642-6652 or email Jonathan.Nero@BHSU.edu.
