BHSU rodeo team finishes second in Iowa

The Black Hills State University Rodeo Teams, which competed in Ames, Iowa, this past weekend at the 48th Annual Cyclone Stampede hosted by Iowa State University, both earned a second place finish and are seeking to move up in the standings.

The Yellow Jackets Men’s Team proved once again to be a threat, as they finished the weekend in second place with 415 points just behind Dickinson State University who had 490 points and ahead of South Dakota State University, who earned 405 points to take third in the men’s team results.

Tye Hale, White Owl, led the men’s team and finished the weekend with a win in the steer wrestling. Hale won the long go round with a 4.1 second run and was third in the short go round with a 4.6 second run which was more than fast enough to get him the title. Hale also placed fifth in the long go round and fifth in average of the team roping.

Other BHSU men’s team point earners were Kyle Albers, Hartford, and Cole Fulton, Miller. Albers gained points in the team roping by placing second in the average and second in the short go round. Fulton placed second in the long go round of the steer wrestling with a 5.1 second run. He also split fifth place in the short go round which led him to a fourth place finish in the average.

The Yellow Jackets Women’s Team also showed they were a force to be reckoned with after they finished the weekend in second place overall just behind Dickinson State University but ahead of North Dakota State. The BHSU Women’s team added 320 points to their stats which allows them to maintain their first place ranking in the Great Plains Region standings.

Joey Painter, Buffalo, was awarded the All-Around Cowgirl title with her placing in the barrel racing, breakaway roping, and the goat tying events. Painter finished third in the average and in the short go round of the barrel racing after her fourth place finish in the long go round. Painter also split fourth place in the goat tying in the long go round, and split fourth in the long go round of the breakaway roping.

Other BHSU Women’s Team point earners were Jamie Britton, Buffalo, and Jordan Murray, Isabel. Britton placed fourth in the barrel racing in the long go round. Murray placed second in the long go round of the goat tying and went on to finish fourth in the short go round which led to a third place finish in the average.

Coach Lammers said, “Our team ran into some challenges in the first performance of the Iowa State University rodeo, but I was impressed with how we were able to recover and finish strong. We are currently practicing to prepare for the smaller arena conditions in Fargo and looking forward to the Bison Stampede.”

The Black Hills State University Rodeo Team will wrap up their fall season of competition Oct. 15–17 at the North Dakota State University Bison Stampede in Fargo, N.D. This will be a double header rodeo.
