Sara Spellman, a professional chef with extensive food service experience, has been named director of A’viands Dining Services at Black Hills State University.
Spellman, who has served as assistant director for the last three years, began her new duties in August.
“Sara has come to be an integral part of the Dining Services operation at Black Hills State University and within the university itself. With her culinary knowledge and leadership, A’viands will continue to provide Black Hills State University with an excellent, state of the art, Dining Services program,” Dr. Lois Flagstad, Vice President for Student Life, says. “We welcome her to her new role as director and look forward to working with her to provide the highest quality dining experience for our students.”
Spellman has a variety of culinary, management, and food service experience including time as a chef in France and leadership positions at several high profile restaurants in Las Vegas, Nev., Washington D.C., and Portland, Ore. Spellman earned a bachelor’s degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., as well as specialized training at the Western Culinary Institute in Portland, Ore.
Chris Volk has been named assistant dining service director at BHSU.
Steve Hedges, previous director, moved into a position of new business development manager for A’viands within their higher education and business dining division in the Minneapolis, Minn., area.
