New disc golf course opens in Spearfish

Spearfish’s second disc course recently opened through the collaborative efforts of the City of Spearfish and the Countryside Disc Golf Club. Hole 12, named Top of the World, is 620 feet, the longest disc golf hole in the state.

Spearfish’s second disc course recently opened through the collaborative efforts of the city of Spearfish and the Countryside Disc Golf Club.

The new course is located south of the city campground just past the intersection of Winterville Street and South Canyon Street.
Don Altmyer, Black Hills State University professor of business, who provided design assistance to the project commented: “The canyon course is very different from the pristine park-like conditions at the Black Hills State University course. The University course is shorter and good for new players and players of all ages and skill levels while the canyon course is more challenging with severe elevation changes, huge pine tree obstacles and extreme rough. Playing a round at the canyon course is like making a round trip hike up to Lookout Mountain.”

Altmyer, who has earned national disc golf titles, was instrumental in establishing the disc golf course on the BHSU campus and is actively involved in promoting disc golf events on campus and throughout the region.

Disc golf is played like traditional ball golf but instead of clubs and balls, the players throw a special golfing disc into an elevated chain basket. The sport is easy to learn and does not require expensive equipment or greens fees. Disc golf provides upper and lower body conditioning and low impact aerobic exercise. In 1995, there were 2 disc golf courses in South Dakota, today there are 38. For a complete listing of courses in South Dakota, visit the PDGA website at

The 14th Annual Swarm Days Disc Golf tournament is scheduled on the BHSU campus course Friday, Oct. 1. The BHSU Student Tournament starts at 3 p.m. with the Community Tournament beginning at 5 p.m. Disc golfer registration will be at the Welcome Board at Hole 1, 30 minutes before the start of each tournament.
