BHSU to host opera performances

Black Hills State University will host opera performances June 25 in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall and June 26 in Woodburn Theatre, as part of the Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute. Both performances are at 7:30 pm and tickets will be available at the door.

The Friday, June 25 performance will feature a major scene from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and the Saturday, June 26 performance will include a full act from Die Fledermaus. All scenes are in English, and are fully staged and costumed. The popular and enjoyable performances are presented by pre-professional opera students in the Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute, now in its 12th year.

Artistic director Johanna Meier is an internationally renowned opera singer who is the daughter of Black Hills Passion Play director Josef Meier. Since her retirement in her native Spearfish, Johanna Meier has been committed to enhancing the education of career-oriented musicians whose goal is performance. She brings her many years of stage experience to help students reach their goals, and many of her professional colleagues in the opera world come to join in the endeavor as faculty and staff members.

The 25 participants of the opera, who are selected by special auditions, participate in master classes, staging sessions, individual coaching sessions, body movement classes, and career advising sessions. The opera scenes are staged and coached by directors from major national opera companies. The accompanists for the opera scenes are professional New York opera coaches, and singers from the Black Hills area participate as chorus members, and BHSU faculty member Dr. Jonathan Nero serves as Chorus Master.

There will be a pre-opera lecture by Johanna Meier on Friday and Saturday at 7 pm. On Saturday, a dinner is available at 5:30 pm in the Meier Hall Atrium. Reservations are required for dinner, tickets are $10; please call 642-6420 or contact shelbychihak@bhsu.edu for reservations and information.
