The opera Dido and Aeneas, previously planned to be performed at Black Hills State University March 19 and 20, has been rescheduled to April 23 and 24.
This short opera by Henry Purcell is one of the few English operas to be composed before 1900. The work, based on Greek characters during the Trojan Wars, is a tragic love story. The opera will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall on the BHSU campus. Donations will be accepted to support the Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute held each summer on the BHSU campus.
The opera is directed by senior music/theater major Tyler Raad, who will also play the role of Aeneas. The role of Dido will be played by Ashton Vandenhoek. Christopher Hahn, instructor of music, will conduct the instrumental ensemble. The operatic soprano Johanna Meier will provide a brief introduction to the opera. A reception will follow the performance hosted by the Friends of Opera.
