Black Hills State University won two awards for excellence in communications materials at the regional Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
BHSU earned silver awards for a poster series and a fundraising publication as a part of the CASE District VI contest. BHSU was the only university in South Dakota to earn CASE award recognition this year. District VI includes nearly 200 universities located in an eight-state region in the upper Midwest.
A series of six informational posters that are currently displayed on first floor of Clare and Josef Meier Hall, created by the Marketing and Communications office, use BHSU’s branding concepts in a contemporary design to highlight the performance opportunities for music students and to emphasize the strengths of the fine arts program at BHSU.
“Creating custom informational displays on our campus that feature our students and programs is a great cost effective way to promote the University and advance our branding efforts,” Corinne Hansen, director of Marketing and Communications, says. “It is an honor to earn prestigious CASE award recognition for this poster series that exemplifies the outstanding experiential learning opportunities offered at BHSU.”
Similar poster series have been created by the Marketing and Communications staff for two other areas on campus. Displays for the College of Education are located on the second floor of Jonas Hall, and posters created for the Athletics Department are displayed in the Young Center. The Jacket Legacy Room in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union also features large banners created to commemorate BHSU’s Quasquicentennial year. Departments who are interested in displays for their areas should contact Marketing and Communications at 642-6215.
A tool kit that the University Advancement staff members created for a fundraising event also earned a silver CASE award. According to Steve Meeker, vice president for University Advancement, the tool kit used a construction theme to present a comprehensive overview of fundraising plans and goals.
In addition to accepting these awards, BHSU staff members made two presentations at the District VI CASE conference.
BHSU President Kay Schallenkamp and Meeker collaborated on a “Power of the Purse” session outlining a new program established at BHSU to involve more community women with BHSU initiatives.
Dwight Hansen, development director at BHSU, presented a session entitled “How to Run a Campaign in a Recession, a really deep recession” His presentation concentrated on the importance of staying in contact with donors, the value of strong leadership, the commitment of staff, strong community leadership, and expertise from a consultant.
