Hunger Banquet Fundraiser to be held at BHSU

A Hunger Banquet will be held at Black Hills State University Monday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the Jacket Legacy Room in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union to raise funds for Haiti relief.

The banquet was organized to raise funds for the people of devastated Haiti, while also increasing awareness of the global disparity in food availability and basic facts about world hunger. According to Global Citizen Corps, 15 percent of the world is in the high income group which represents a population with a per capita income of $9,076 or more. As you move closer to the middle-income group, which is approximately 30-35 percent of the world’s population, earnings are between $912 and $9,075 a year. The majority of the world’s population live on less than $911 or about $2.50 a day, and significant numbers earn much less.

At the banquet, participants will draw tickets for their meal. The meals served will reflect the food consumption patterns of the world’s population. Some of the participants will have a full dinner served on a table with linens and china, a few more will get a very modest meal, and the majority will find nothing more than a little bit of rice or noodles. The banquet will include presentations, discussion, and a silent auction.

Hunger Banquet tickets are $5 each. Tickets are available at the information desk in the Student Union beginning Monday the 22. A limited number of tickets are available, so reservations are suggested. The banquet is open to the community. All proceeds will be donated to the Haitian relief efforts.

The event is sponsored by the Sociology and Human Services Club, a BHSU student organization, and the University Multicultural Committee. For more information email Micheline.Hickenbotham@bhsu.edu or call 642-6243.
