The University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra (UWSO) will be performing at Black Hills State University Monday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall.
The concert is part of a Wyoming/South Dakota tour for the orchestra, and will include the selections from Handel’s Royal Fireworks Music, Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony, Blue Windows by Joe Curiale (originally written for Doc Severinsen), the Hummel Trumpet Concerto, A Camp David Overture by the young American composer Bruce Roter, and more.
Appearing as a soloist with the orchestra will be Scott Meredith, professor of trumpet at UW. The UWSO’s long-time maestro, Michael Griffith will conduct.
Now in his 21st year as Director of Orchestral Activities at UW, Michael Griffith has been guest conductor for Orquestra Petrobras Pro Musica in Rio de Janeiro, Cleveland’s Opus I Chamber Orchestra, Opera Fort Collins the Fort Collins Symphony, Denver’s Mercury Ensemble, the Cheyenne Symphony, the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder, and high school honors ensembles in states from Maryland to Colorado. He and the UWSO are winners of an ASCAP/American Symphony Orchestra League Award for Adventurous Programming, he was elected a Top Ten Teacher by the graduating class of 2006, and the soundtrack he conducted for Wyoming Public Television’s Wyoming Voices won both a Gold Aurora award and a Videographer Award of Distinction. He is President of the Conductors Guild. His conducting studies were at the Pierre Monteux School, at Michigan State University, and at the University of Colorado, where he earned his doctorate.
Scott Meredith is Assistant Professor of trumpet at the University of Wyoming where he teaches applied trumpet, Jazz Techniques, Jazz History, and directs the UW trumpet ensemble. He currently serves as brass area head and is collegiate vice president of the Wyoming Music Educators Association. He has performed nationally with the Owensboro Symphony (KY), the Irving, Plano, and San Angelo Symphonies (TX), Dallas Wind Symphony, Orchestra of New Spain (TX), Newcastle Brass Quintet, Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado, Boulder Philharmonic and the Colorado Jazz Orchestra. Currently, he is Principal trumpet of the Wyoming Symphony of Casper and Opera Fort Collins, and Co-Principal trumpet in the Cheyenne and Fort Collins Symphonies. Dr. Meredith is also on the faculty of Western State Chamber Institute (Gunnison, CO). Previous appointments include University of Northern Colorado and the University of North Texas.
Orchestra tours are funded by the Symphony Association for the University of Wyoming and its Ricky Blackstone Orchestra Travel Endowment, private donors and host communities.
