BHSU business students provide marketing strategies to Spearfish Economic Development Corporation Board

Black Hills State University business students from the team “KKCJ Advertising” present their advertising strategies to members of the Spearfish Economic Development Corporation Board. The team, comprised of Kayla Finn from Rapid City, Kevin Silbernagel from Black Hawk, Chrissy Schieffer, from Sturgis and Ja Young Han from Ohjeong-Gu, South Korea, was one of several teams that developed marketing strategies for the SDEC as a part of their coursework.

Black Hills State University business students recently had the opportunity to present advertising plans to members of the Spearfish Economic Development Corporation Board (SDEC).

Dr. Patty Bellamy, associate professor of marketing, gave her advertising class an assignment to develop an advertising plan targeting out-of-state businesses that may have an interest in relocating to Spearfish, as part of their final grade in the class. Students were divided into teams and asked to present their plans to the class and the SDEC board.

"Having the chance to work with Professor Bellamy's advertising students was a great opportunity for Spearfish Economic Development to gain fresh perspectives on how Spearfish can market itself to businesses looking to expand or relocate. In 2010, we will definitely be incorporating many of the strategies suggested by the student teams. I especially liked their creativeness regarding the use of online media and social networking," notes Bryan Walker, SDEC director. “Overall I was very impressed with the students’ presentations. I am impressed by the talent we have at Black Hills State University."

Other members of the SDEC board observing presentations were Barbara Zwetzig, BHSU Center for Business, Entrepreneurship and Tourism; John Segrist, retired dentist/businessman; Brad Gordon, attorney, Tellinghuisen & Gordon; Dave Donat, Financial Advisors of the Black Hills; and Dan Green, First Western Insurance Agency.

For the last ten years, students in Bellamy’s class have worked with businesses in the region on a variety of marketing projects. This arrangement gives the students the opportunity to work on real projects to compliment their coursework and provides local businesses and organizations the opportunity to learn new marketing strategies. Bellamy notes that pairing students with business entities is a “win-win situation.”

“The students have the opportunity to develop skills needed in the workplace and gain experience working with local business people. The students’ plans help the business community as well,” Bellamy says.
