The Black Hills State University music students now have access to a new grand piano which was donated by Dwight and Sharlotte Miller from Spearfish in support of their daughters’ interest in music and in memory of their grandmother who had a lifelong interest in music.

Daughters of the Miller couple, Lori Miller, BHSU adjunct faculty member and piano teacher, and Nikki Miller, a music teacher in the Dupree school system, both earned music degrees from BHSU and are carrying on their great-grandmother Ellen Kelley’s love of music. Kelley passed away this year at the age of 103.

“This is a wonderful gift to the University from the Miller family and we are so appreciative. We are excited about playing the new piano during our concerts and the teaching opportunities it provides,” Dr. Janeen Larsen, chair of the department of music, says.

The Miller couple became aware of the University’s need for a grand piano while attending a duet performance last spring. The Millers donated the Yamaha GC2 grand piano, purchased from Black Hills Piano Gallery for $19,800, to the BHSU music department.
