Black Hills State University will celebrate Constitution Day on Sept. 17 from 2-3 p.m. with an in-depth look at Abraham Lincoln and his work.
President Lincoln has been heralded as the nation’s savior and Great Emancipator. He has also been damned for abusing the Constitution and stretching Presidential powers beyond their legal limits, notes Dr. David Wolff, associate professor of history.
Members of the history and social science department at BHSU will discuss this complex man, in this 200th year of his birth, with a series of brief presentations, followed by an open discussion.
The program is titled “The Constitution in the Shadow of Lincoln.”
The presenters and topics are:
• Dr. David Wolff -- “Meeting Lincoln”
• Dr. Pamela Carriveau – “Lincoln’s Constitution: Secession and Slavery”
• Dr. Tim Martinez – “The Constitution and Lincoln’s War Powers”
• Dr. Robert Campbell – “Was Lincoln Great?”
The presentations will be held in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall Sept. 17. For more information please contact David Wolff at 605-642-6221 or David.Wolff@bhsu.edu.
