BHSU RSVP volunteer featured in stories of service blog

Black Hills State University Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) member Darlene Swartz was recently featured in the Stories of Service Blog on the Serve.gov website.

Swartz, professor emeritus of education, is currently serving as a volunteer lunch buddy at West Elementary in Spearfish. The lunch buddy program pairs up an RSVP volunteer with an under privileged child who may get little-to-no interaction with adults. The child and the buddy have lunch once a week together.

Swartz feels education is very important. “I enjoy spending time with the elementary children. This year, I was visiting another school and I saw some of the children I had spent time with last year. They recognized me, and one came and gave me a hug. One asked me to say hello to his teacher. I think I [am] more rewarded [from this assignment] than the children,” she says.
