BHSU to offer a fall building inspection course available in your community

Black Hills State University will offer a building inspection course during the fall 2009 semester. The course will be offered using the state’s interactive television network, the Dakota Digital Network (DDN), and will be available at DDN sites throughout South Dakota.

Residential building inspectors provide assurance of structural quality and general safety. About 40 percent of building inspectors are employed by local governments; many inspectors are self employed. National model building and construction codes published by the International Code Council (ICC) are adopted by most communities. Local governments regulate the building industry within their own communities; however the ICC regulates the certification process. The Residential Building Inspector’s Certificate will provide basic building expertise. For details see the ICC website at: http://www.iccsafe.org

The class meets once a week on Thursday afternoons, from 4 – 7 p.m. (Mountain Time), Sept. 3 to Dec. 17. This course may be taken for three college credits for $761.85 plus book or as a non-credit offering for $729 plus book. Instruction of the class will be provided by Tom Paisley, City of Spearfish Building Official.

This course serves as a test preparation course, but does not provide the student with the ICC certificate. Students must pass the ICC test to get the certificate. The course is valuable even if students are not interested in certification.

For more information on taking this course for college credit, contact the College of Business and Technology at BHSU at (605) 642-6212. For questions on taking this course as a non-credit offering, contact Educational Outreach at (605) 642-6321 or email CherylTempleton@BHSU.edu.
